Conquered Greek Skill Tree (Again)

I did an extra Greek lesson to-day and conquered the skill tree on Duolingo again:

Ukrainian

Partially because the Ukraine has been in the news a lot lately (which I know even though I don't follow the news), I started learning Ukrainian on Duolingo:

I've done only the first lesson so far, but I found it interesting that "mom" and "dad" were among the words I learned.  I don't know if these words were chosen because they have few letters, because they have cognates in many other languages, or because it simulates learning a language naturally ("mom" and "dad" are probably among the first words learned in one's native language).  Maybe some combination of these.

I'm starting to lose track of how many languages I'm learning now, so - mostly for my own future reference - here's a list (plus when I started):
  1. German (fall 2006)
  2. French (late 2008)
  3. Latin (29 August 2011)
  4. Italian (9 June 2014)
  5. Dutch (10 August 2014)
  6. Spanish (2 May 2015)
  7. Norwegian (28 May 2015)
  8. Esperanto (28 May 2015)
  9. Danish (24 September 2015)
  10. Russian (2 November 2015)
  11. Polish (10 December 2015)
  12. Hebrew (21 June 2016)
  13. Greek (10 October 2016)
  14. Welsh (3 January 2017)
  15. Swedish (11 March 2017)
  16. Portuguese (11 March 2017)
  17. Czech (12 September 2017)
  18. Irish (15 September 2017)
  19. Turkish (24 September 2017)
  20. Romanian (24 September 2017)
  21. Navajo (8 October 2018)
  22. Hungarian (22 October 2018)
  23. Hawaiian (20 June 2019)
  24. Scottish (27 November 2019)
  25. Finnish (25 June 2020)
  26. Arabic (27 November 2020)
  27. Anglo-Saxon (1 March 2021)
  28. Yiddish (28 April 2021)
  29. Aramaic (1 October 2021)
  30. Gothic (6 November 2021)
  31. Ukrainian (22 February 2022)

German Level 1 Trophy

I'd reached German level 4 on Duolingo last summer, but the skill tree was updated since then (I don't remember when specifically), and Duolingo took my trophy away.  I regained level 1 to-day though:

Language Learning Update

It's been about a year since I last wrote a post like this, and I've made a number of changes since then, so it's about time for such a post.

This morning, after a little over two years, I finished copying out the entirety of Mark as part of my working through the archives of the Daily Dose of Greek.  When I first signed up for the Daily Dose, the series was in Mark 10, and I didn't start copying out the verses until Mark 14.

Near the end of August, I created an Instagram account specifically for language things.  Here's a post about finishing Mark:

I'm also starting a new language:  Gothic!  Like I did with Anglo-Saxon earlier this year, I found a book about Gothic on the Internet Archive:  A Primer of the Gothic Language by Joseph Wright (1899).  So far, I've read just the prefaces and a bit of the introduction, though.  This is foreign language #30, and/so I wanted to start it before I turn thirty (an age that hardly seems possible).

In July, I started going through two more language books:  A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew by J. Weingreen and Teach Yourself Norwegian by I. Marm and Alf Sommerfelt.

In early September (the 5th, I think), I added daily Duolingo lessons in Portuguese and Romanian to my regular regimen of language practice.  This brings the daily Duolingo languages to a total of fourteen:  Yiddish, Russian, Hebrew, Greek, [one of a cycle*], German, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Esperanto, Portuguese, Romanian, and Arabic.  Sometime in the last few months (I don't quite remember when, but probably July or August), I stopt doing Latin on Duolingo.  The course was limited in its scope, and it seemed that, for some reason, I wasn't getting credit for what I was practicing.  I was getting a bit irritated by some of the sentences too.  I'm still practicing Latin daily via Wheelock's Latin, though.

German novel translation is still progressing slowly but steadily.  Near the beginning of September, I revived an-other German translation project, this one of a book of hymn texts published by Concordia Publishing House in 1902.

As I mentioned in October, I started learning Aramaic via the newest Daily Dose.  I'm a bit behind in watching the lessons (much of which is way beyond me), but I started copying out the verses from Daniel 2 when those videos started at the beginning of the month.  I'm following along with the Daily Dose of Hebrew in Psalm 119.  I had been and am currently going through some books again, copying out the verses this time.  I went through Ruth (November 2020 to April 2021), am currently going through Amos (started in August, currently in chapter 5), and plan on going through Obadiah next.  The Daily Dose of Greek and the Daily Dose of Latin are both going through John (Greek is nearing the end of chapter 10; Latin just started chapter 5).  As noted above, I just finished going through Mark in the archives of the Daily Dose of Greek, and I started Philemon.  After Philemon, I'm going to go through James again.

I've been watching lessons from Aleph with Beth (Hebrew) and Alpha with Angela (Greek), but I haven't managed to do this consistently.  I'm trying to work out a schedule.

Russian Level 4 Trophy

The "share" button doesn't work, so this post won't match the others, but I reached level 4 in the Duolingo Russian course:

Aramaic

A couple days ago, I learned that, along the same lines as the Daily Dose of Hebrew, Daily Dose of Greek, and Daily Dose of Latin, there is now a Daily Dose of Aramaic.  I signed up, got the first email yester-day, and watched the first video to-day (I always watch the Daily Dose videos the day after I get them).  So now I'm studying twenty-nine languages.

I conquered the Arabic skill tree on Duolingo:

I don't feel that I know as much as this would seem to indicate, however.
